The Department of Philosophy announces the William T. Blackstone Honors Philosophy Scholarship, an annual award of $1500 to be awarded in the Spring semester of each academic year. Honors students who have demonstrated overall academic excellence and a strong interest in philosophy are eligible to apply. This scholarship honors the memory of William T. Blackstone who served as the Head of the Department of Philosophy and Religion at the University of Georgia from 1964 to 1972 and taught regularly for the Honors Program. Blackstone was an accomplished academic leader, but he declined full-time administrative work in favor of teaching. His early work focused on religion and ethics, but he later turned to deep explorations of theories of justice and equality as they applied to moral situations including environmental ethics, reverse discrimination, health care and more. Bill Blackstone succumbed to cancer in 1977 at the age of 45. This scholarship assures his memory will live on. Type of News/Audience: Announcement Read More: For more information on the William T.
