Why Study Philosophy?

Philosophy provides highly valued skills that are essential in most career paths

Those who study philosophy develop exceptional analytical and critical skills as well as superior writing ability. Students of philosophy are trained in logic, fostering their ability to think rationally and develop clear arguments for positions on subject matters applying to nearly any field. The study of philosophy fosters valuable skills that are desirable in many important and lucrative career fields including Communications, Research, Law, Politics, Nonprofit Organizations, Consulting, and more.

Philosophy majors have the highest out-of-college income among all humanities graduates

The study of philosophy trains one to write lucidly, think critically, and engage in rational decision making—skills necessary for success in most highly respected career fields. It is no surprise that philosophy majors go on to career success with the highest out-of-college income among all humanities majors.

Applying to Law School? Philosophy majors have the second highest LSAT scores of ALL majors

LSAT statistics show that philosophy students produce some of the highest scores among all majors, coming in second only to physics/math majors. The UGA Department of Philosophy has developed particular curriculum paths for undergraduate students considering a future in Law School, including a minor in Law, Ethics, & Philosophy and a Pre-Law track for philosophy majors. The study of philosophy requires analytical reasoning, logical reasoning, & reading comprehension—all skills which are evaluated by the LSAT. Philosophy majors are highly trained in presenting arguments by manipulating language, a core ability required for the study of law. The study of philosophy provides a statistically proven path to success in a future career in law.

Philosophy classes are interactive and students are encouraged to express their opinions and offer original points of view. Philosophy classes are inspiring and intellectual experiences offering unique opportunities to explore knowledge from diverse angles.
