University of Pittsburgh assistant professor Japa Pallikkathayil will speak on "Freedom of Speech & the Embodied Self" in 115 Peabody Hall on Friday, November 2 at 3:30pm as part of the Scott & Heather Kleiner Lecture Series. Pallikkathayil works in applied ethics and on issues at the intersection of moral and political philosophy, recently focusing on the topics of coercion, deception, and exploitation. Her work has been featured in publications including American Philosophical Quarterly, Philosophy & Public Affairs, and Ethics. This talk will address poignant contemporary issues regarding democratic theories of free speech, addressing the tension between a democratic justification of the right to free speech and hate speech regulation. Pallikkathayil will argue that bodily rights can constrain the right to free speech in ways that can justify hate speech regulation and hate speech regulation can be consistent with a democratic justification of the right to free speech.
