Staff Sergeant Alex Asay on duty at Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia. PhD student Alex Asay has been awarded a Fall 2024 scholarship from The UGA Foundation through the Student Veterans Resource Center and was awarded The Air and Space Commendation Medal by the Air Force for his actions abroad. The Department of Philosophy recently welcomed Alex back as he rejoined the department following a six month deployment at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. Alex is a Staff Sergeant in the 116th Security Forces Squadron, 116th Air Control Wing, Georgia Air National Guard. His deployment was in support of Operations Inherent Resolve, Spartian Shield, and Prosperity Guardian in which he served as a C-sUAS (Installation-Counter small Unmanned Aircraft Systems) operator. In addition to his military service and PhD studies, Alex is co-authoring a book with Dr. Fransico Javier López Frías, Associate Professor of Kinesiology, Philosophy, and Bioethics at Penn State on the philosophy of games/sport, utopia, and the good life. "I want to thank the Philosophy Department for the support I received while away," says Alex. "Administrative staff Nancy Hines and Sonya Tino were extremely helpful in getting me reintegrated into the UGA system upon my return."
