2024 Undergraduates Win Awards

Presidential Award of Excellence winner Sophia Zavala's

Congratulations to Presidential Award of Excellence winner Sophia Gavalas, a double major in Philosophy and Microbiology. This prestigious honor is awarded to only a handful of graduating seniors each year and we are very proud to have a winner among our Class of 2024. Gavalas was a CURO Summer Research Fellow in 2022, and has won two CURO Research Awards. She is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honors Society, Co-President of the American Medical Student Association, and shift captain for Campus Kitchens, a student-led hunger relief effort that provides meals to food-insecure families in the Athens area. Ms. Gavalas has been accepted to an NIH-funded Medical Scientist Training Program that will allow her to pursue an MD-PhD dual degree in pursuit of a career as a physician-scientist. She has been accepted to the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and will mostly likely continue her education there in the fall of 2024.

The Department of Philosophy is also excited to announce the 2024 departmental undergraduate award and scholarship winners. Congratulations to Austin Kral, Joshua Track, Samuel T. Denton, Ryne Barry, and Samantha Ludewig.

The Blackstone Scholarship: Austin Kral

Austin Kral is a fourth-year at the University of Georgia studying cognitive science, computer science, mathematics, and philosophy. He is a member of the Franklin Residential College, where he served as academic chair, and spent two years as an undergraduate researcher in the Visual Perception Laboratory. He is interested in logic, language, computation, and complex systems and intends to pursue graduate studies in one or more of these areas following graduation.

 

 

The Richard H. Severens Scholarship: Joshua Track

Joshua Track is a philosophy and political science double major. He graduates this year and plans to pursue a Master's in philosophy at UGA. He hoped to pursue a JD/PhD dual degree afterwards and practice law while spending he free time researching in political philosophy.

 

 

 

 

The Frank Harrison III Scholarship: Samuel T. Denton

Samuel T. Denson is a senior philosophy and economics major with an interest in the philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel and the philosophy of logic. After graduating this Spring, he  plans to attend Boston College in the Fall to pursue an M.A. in Philosophy.

 

 

 

 

 

The Frank Harrison III Scholarship: Ryne Barry

Ryne is a 4th year philosophy major graduating this May. He will be returning in the upcoming fall semester to pursue a MA in philosophy as part of the Double Dawgs program. Ryne is interested in ancient and medieval philosophy as well as early 20th century continental philosophy and hopes to further research the metaphysical/epistemological problems addressed in these areas of philosophy.

 

 

 

 

The Horace B. Russell Prize: Samantha Ludewig

Samantha Ludewig  is majoring in A.B. Economics and double minoring in Law, Jurisprudence, & the State and Spanish. She is particularly interested in linguistics and the philosophy of law. She plans to attend law school in the future.
